What is this course about?

The sessions are focused on how as parents we can support our family to be happy, positive and calm. We start off with some theory on parenting and family units, then look at practical examples focused on raising happy, safe, and secure children as they move through adolescence and into adulthood.  We discuss motivation, brain development, emotional wellbeing and managing misbehaviour and risk taking.  The course is based on nurture and attachment parenting styles.

What will I learn?

The sessions will be fun and practical with lots of information, activities, and resources for you to use at home.

How will I learn?

There will be class discussions and interactive activities to support your learning.

How will my learning be assessed?

There is no formal assessment on Family Learning courses. You will improve your knowledge and skills so that you can move on to a Functional Skills course if that suits you.

Entry requirements:

You need to be a parent / grandparent / carer of a child attending secondary school. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. When the course is full, no other enrolments can take place.  To enable you to fully access the information and activities on this course you will need to be confident in Speaking and Listening at E2.

If you have children attending primary school, we also offer a Positive Family Foundations course for parents / carers of primary aged children.

If you have a pre-school aged child, then our ‘Wider Family Learning’ course may be more suitable. These are courses that children and their carers attend together, like stay and play sessions. Our ‘English and Maths in the primary school’ courses explain the ways these subjects are taught in modern British primary schools.
